SUMMARY:Solon Spiro From Immigrant Store Clerk to Mining Magnate given by Mark Danninger and Sandy Brumley
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will host a lecture called Solon Spiro From Immigrant Store Clerk to Mining Magnate given by Mark Danninger and Sandy Brumley on November 15th from 5-6 p.m. at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. \nSolon Spiro was one of Park City’s most prominent miners. Born to a Jewish family in Prussia\, he immigrated to the US in 1881 directly finding his way to Park City to serve as a clerk in the general store of his uncle M.S. Ascheim. He built The Silver King Consolidated Mine (King Con)\, which he operated profitably for many years. He won a major lawsuit against the Silver King Coalition mines in 1913\, but eventually sold to them in 1924. A popular legend claims that when Silver King took over the Spiro Tunnel\, that a major ore discovery was made by driving the tunnel “another 40 feet.” Who was Solon Spiro and how close does this legend lie to the truth? \nMark is a mining engineer with over 30 years’ experience in underground mining\, maintenance\, welding\, project management\, safety and consulting. He holds Bachelor’s Degrees in Mining Engineering and Welding Engineering\, as well as a Master’s Degree in Physical Metallurgy\, all from Montana Tech.\, in Butte\, Montana. He is a long-term resident of Park City. Sandy Brumley has a B.A. in Economics from Northwestern University and an M.B.A. in Marketing and Finance from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He is a member of Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History.
