SUMMARY:Overhead Tramways in Park City Lecture by Steve Leatham
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History are hosting a lecture called Overhead Tramways in Park City presented by Steve Leatham from 5-6 p.m. on Wednesday\, September 11\, 2019 at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. \nThe Doppelmayr-Garaventa Group is the world’s leading manufacturer of ski lifts.  Today it is the leader in uphill transportation at ski resorts worldwide.  Nearly two-thirds of the 3\,500 chairlifts in North America are of the Doppelmeyr brand.  In Utah\, the company has “essentially 100 percent” of the market.  Doppelmayr USA\, is based in Salt Lake City\, Utah\, and a subsidiary of the worldwide Doppelmayr-Garaventa Group. What is the connection between today’s Doppelmayr ski lifts and the historic Silver King Coalition\, Silver King Consolidated\, and Park Utah Consolidated aerial tramways? \nThe Park Record reported that Park City’s aerial tramways were “of the latest design and modern in every particular.  In every detail the tramways were as modern as money and engineering talent could make them.” \nAerial tramways were built to haul large amounts of materials to and from mines economically.  They provided a cost-effective alternative to building roads or railroads.  An aerial tramway worked under all weather conditions even with great depths of snow on the ground.  Learn which mine superintendent had his own special tramway car to transport him to the mine when he visited. \nJoin us as former educator and gondola operator Steve Leatham presents a closer look at these fantastic wire rope machines of the past.

SUMMARY:Hike Through History to the Thaynes Conveyor & Gourmet Picnic - Thursday\, August 8\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Pat Pond and Robin Fillion are back by popular demand with their gourmet lunch (prepared from scratch) for the Thursday August 8th History Hike. The menu includes: grilled flank steak or portobella mushrooms\, crusty rolls\, delicious salads and sumptuous desserts. \nWe’ll begin by riding the Crescent Lift from Park City Mountain Resort base. Guest Guides Hope and Sanford Melville will lead us on the iconic Keystone Trail to the Crescent\, Apex and California Mines\, the California Comstock Mill and the D& M Mine. Our 5-star lunch will be served at the Thaynes Conveyor. There we’ll meet contractor Clark Martinez and learn about the on-going project to stabilize the long conveyor between the Thaynes shaft and the huge waste rock pile. Our return will be via the Crescent Lift. \nThe hike and lunch is an all-day event (9:30am to 3:00pm)\, with moderately strenuous hiking and elevation gain of 1\,000 ft. Reservations are required. \nAll proceeds benefit the Thaynes Conveyor stabilization efforts\, a partnership project of Park City Mountain Resort and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History\, a committee of the Park City Museum. Silver mines once dotted the mountains surrounding Park City and a labyrinth of mine tunnels extend more than 1\,000 miles under Park City’s trails. The Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History seek to stabilize and preserve the legacy of Park City’s historic mining structures for future residents and visitors alike. \nEVENT IS SOLD OUT!\n\n\n \n \n Additional Membership Donation\n \n \n FacebookThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Additional Membership Donation\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:I Remember When Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:What was it like growing up in Park City when it was a mining town? What changes occurred when Park City went from mining to skiing? What did families do in their backyards or porches in the past? What was Park City like before and during the Olympics? How have the schools changed over the years? To find out the answer to these questions and more\, come to Park City Museum’s panel discussion with some local Parkites who have lived through it all! Join Steve Leatham\, Jim Weaver\, Don Williams\, Phil Jones\, Jim Tedford\, and Karri Dell Hays as they tell us what Park City was like during the old days as Steve Reggentin moderates the discussion. The panel discussion will be held on Wednesday\, July 10th from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. The discussion helps promote our new exhibit Patios\, Pools\, & the Invention of the American Backyard on display until November 20\, 2019. The suburban backyard is an American original—an invention so familiar it hardly seems invented at all. Patios\, Pools\, & the Invention of the American Backyard explores the mid-century backyard from the rise of the suburbs and tract houses\, to the beauty of postwar garden design\, and the birth of the environmental movement. Filled with vintage photographs\, historic drawings\, and fun period advertisements\, the exhibition reveals how these spaces became such an integral part of American popular culture. Patios\, Pools\, & the Invention of the American Backyard is presented by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Smithsonian Gardens’ Archive of American Gardens.Questions? SUMMARY:Showcasing the Legacy of Lagoon Lecture given by Lynn Arave
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host Lynn Arave who will give a lecture titled Showcasing the Legacy of Lagoon on Thursday\, May 16th from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. Only 7 amusement parks in the United States have older histories than Lagoon – and they are all east of the Mississippi. However\, “Lagoon” wasn’t its original name and the park has moved locations once. From big band to opera to horse and auto racing to bowling and wrestling to high diving\, Lagoon has hosted a variety of events over the decades — besides its many thrill rides. This lecture will highlight what you probably don’t know about Lagoon’s extensive history.Lynn Arave graduated from Weber State University. He worked as a reporter/editor for the Deseret News for 32 years. He has written 5 books and has a popular blog\, “The Mystery of Utah History\,” often utilized often by fourth and seventh grade Utah history classes. He has conducted extensive research on Lagoon’s early history. This lecture coincides with Park City Museum’s traveling exhibition called Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland which will be on display from April 6\, 2019 to May 25\, 2019.For more than 150 years\, Coney Island\, a strip of sand at the mouth of New York Harbor\, has occupied a singular place in the American imagination. From a beginning as a watering hole for the wealthy\, through its transformation into an amusement and entertainment mecca for the masses\, to its struggle for renewal in recent decades\, an extraordinary array of artists have viewed Coney Island as a microcosm of the American experience. The exhibition brings to life the excitement of Coney Island\, showing visitors how its magnetic world of attractions has become a touchstone for American mass culture and popular recreation. Adapted from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art’s flagship exhibition Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland\, 1861–2008\, this new traveling exhibition from NEH on the Road will explore America’s playground as a place and as an idea\, examining its persistent presence in the American imagination.

SUMMARY:“My mule enjoyed the joke:” A.J. Russell’s Western Adventures\, 1868-1869 Lecture Presented by Daniel Davis
DESCRIPTION:“My mule enjoyed the joke:” A.J. Russell’s Western Adventures\, 1868-1869Presenter: Daniel Davis\, Photograph Curator and Associate Librarian\, Utah State University Libraries Special Collections and ArchivesAndrew J. Russell took nearly 1\,000 photographs of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868 and 1869. Today his photographs are analyzed as art\, as historical evidence\, and as cultural objects. But who was he as a person? Daniel Davis\, author of Across the Continent: the Union Pacific Photographs of Andrew J. Russell\, (co-published by University of Utah Press and Utah State Historical Society\, 2018\,) will discuss Russell’s background and personality and how that influenced the photographs he made. the lecture will be held at the Park City Museum’s Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive on Wednesday\, May 1st from 5-6 p.m. Davis will examine Russell’s images as well as contemporary sources and explain how he came to the conclusion that Russell was\, “an ordinary man caught up in extraordinary events.”Taken as a whole\, the photographs show that Russell did not want viewers to forget who built the Union Pacific. His images celebrate working people – masons working on bridge foundations\, freighters and their wagons\, surveyors with their transits\, engine crews posed on their engines\, as well as tracklayers\, laborers\, cooks\, machinists\, carpenters\, graders\, teamsters\, and clerks pushing paper.Russell contributed to a golden age of Western photography that visually introduced the American West to the nation\, changing its public image from that of a Great American Desert to a place of unlimited economic potential. Daniel Davis grew up in Worland\, Wyoming and attended the University of Wyoming earning a master’s degree in history in 1997. He worked as the photograph archivist at the American Heritage Center from 1996 to 2000. In 2000 he moved to Logan becoming the photograph curator with the Special Collections & Archives Department at Utah State University. He received tenure as an associate librarian in 2006. In 2014 he became the coordinator of instruction for Special Collections. His research interest is with 19th Century photographers of the American West and he has published in the Utah Historical Quarterly and the Annals of Wyoming. He lives with his wife Ashlee and daughter Emilee in Nibley\, Utah.
