SUMMARY:Sweeney Switchback Hike with David Nicholas
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 17th the Park City Museum will host a “historic” hike following the Sweeney Switchback up to the Silver King Coalition Mine. During the hike we’ll discuss the Silver King Aerial Tramway\, the Silver King Mine Company\, the former industrial area of lower Park City and the connection between the Brooklyn Bridge and the tramway. David Nicholas will be your guide. \nThis is a “strenuous” hike especially so considering the oppressive heat dome that has settled over our area. Dress accordingly and bring plenty of water\, snacks\, a hat\, and sunscreen. Expect four hours round trip including riding the Old Town chair lift down. \nWe may even have a “special” guest join us. \nIf you are a member and would like to join us on one of these hikes\, please contact Diane Knispel\, at education@parkcityhistory.org with the following information: \n• Which hike you would like to go on?\n• Names of people going on the hike.\n• Email address associated with your membership.\n• A contact phone number (preferably a cell phone that you will have with you morning of the hike)\n• Do you need a lift ticket for your hike or not? \nWhat If I Am Not a Member Yet? \nIf you are not a member and would like to join us for a hike\, please register as a member on our website at https://parkcityhistory.org/membership. \nOnce you are registered\, please contact Diane Knispel with the information needed that is listed above. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Ontario Ridge Hike with Wayne McKay
DESCRIPTION:Ontario Ridge Hike with Wayne McKay at 9:30 a.m. \nIntermediate loop hike\, 5+ miles long with 700 vertical feet of elevation. Since we end at the top of Main Street there will be lots of lunch options should folks be hungry. \nHikers should bring water\, sunscreen and snacks. \nThis will be a combination mine history & woodsy hike as there are a large number of buildings and artifacts\, including the Ontario drain tunnel and remnants of the High Line train track built in 1889 to serve the Ontario Mill. The hike will head up the Prospect Trail along Ontario Ridge (a single track with ruins of old mining cabins\, an abandoned DeSoto\, plus a string of towers for the Daly Aerial Tram—one of three such trams that once served the Park City Mines). We’ll follow it through alternating forests of Aspen and pine until we empty out onto the gravel two-track Ontario Ridge Road just under the Deer Valley Lady Morgan ski lift. We’ll take Empire Canyon to the Daly Mining Companies buildings\, comprised of the Judge Mining & Smelting Company Office structure(s)\, of which there are quite a few including an explosive bunker and the Alliance Watchman’s Cabin. Continuing down the canyon we’ll see more mining remnants including mine dumps for the American Flag and Massachusetts Mines. \nIf you are not a member and would like to join us for a hike\, please register as a member on our website at https://parkcityhistory.org/membership. Once you are registered\, please contact Diane Knispel with the information needed that is listed above. Thank you! \nI will send you a confirmation email closer to the time with the place to meet and parking information.

SUMMARY:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark
DESCRIPTION:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark at 10:30 a.m. \nThis hike is a 6 to 6.5 mile hike. It is long but not too steep. It is considered moderately difficult with an 1100-foot elevation gain. We will stop at the turn around point at Shadow Lake (by the Jupiter Lift base) for a 30-minute break for snack/lunch. Please bring water\, snacks and sunscreen! Because of our stops at mine sites allow 3.5 hours for this hike. \nIf you have a pass\, please bring it\, if not a lift ticket will be provided. We will be riding The Crescent Lift. We’ll start our hike at the top of the Crescent Lift. We’ll visit the King Con Ore Bin and see the area where the King Con Tram brought ore over the ridge. Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form the Silver King Consolidated\, or the King Con\, as it was known. \nWe’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon\, where we will see The California-Comstock Mine\, perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property. We’ll also hike close to the Thaynes Complex. Along the way we will talk about the old rail system that was used to move ore down the mountain.\nWe’ll hike the area of the 1883 Matt Brennan murder. He was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey being conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski. John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later. Was Black Jack the real killer? Dramatic speculation will ensue. \nWe’ll then hike up to Shadow Lake near the base of the Jupiter Lift for a snack/lunch break. After our break we will hike back to the Crescent chair for the ride down to the PC base! \nIf you are a member and would like to join us on this hike\, please contact Diane Knispel\, at education@parkcityhistory.org with the following information: \n• Which hike you like to go on?\n• Names of people going on the hike.\n• Email address associated with your membership.\n• A contact phone number (preferably a cell phone that you will have with you morning of the hike) \nIf you are not a member and would like to join us for a hike\, please register as a member on our website at https://parkcityhistory.org/membership. SUMMARY:Railroad Walk and Talk given by David Nicholas
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 5 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or so the Park City Museum will host a walk and talk exploring the former in town infrastructure of both the Union Pacific Railroad and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroads. Board member and Museum Researcher David Nicholas will be your “conductor” for the journey back in time. \nBefitting an industrial mining town\, Park City featured two railroad yards\, two train stations and over fifteen (15) different sidings serving various industries. Rails originally reached Park City in 1880. The last train departed the summer of 1988. \nAnother consideration\, we may have two guests join us who both lived in town when the railroad was vital to the prosperity of Park City. \nPlease bring water\, sunscreen\, snacks\, and a hat. We’ll be walking on sidewalks and/or the rail trail. \nCome join us – it will be fun! SUMMARY:Not Who He Seems? lecture given by David Nicholas and Stuart Stanek
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Not Who He Seems? given by David Nicholas and Stuart Stanek on Wednesday\, October 16\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nOn January 6 1936 a member of the Austrian Royal Family visited Park City. Count Felix von Schaffgotsch was handsome\, wealthy\, sophisticated and an avid skier. Hired by Averell Harriman\, CEO and COB of the Union Pacific Railroad\, Felix was tasked with developing a grand North American Ski Resort – one without equal. He would embark on a multi month 7000-mile journey in search of a winter “shanghai la”. Park City was a candidate for this endeavor. However\, despite appearances Felix may have harbored ulterior motives. Please join David Nicholas and Stuart Stanek as they discuss the enigmas surrounding Count von Schaffgotsch. \nDavid Nicholas serves on the Board of the Park City Museum\, is interested in local history\, and frequently contributes to the “Way We Were” series. Also\, he conducts periodic lectures and historic hikes. His particular interests include but are not limited to Park City’s transportation history and local plane crashes. \nStuart Stanek is a forty-year broadcasting veteran. He managed one hundred and twenty-five radio stations in twenty-five different markets across the country. He served as a general manager and a regional President for iHeart Radio which is the nation’s largest broadcaster. He was involved in all facets of the business including sales\, programming\, operations\, and marketing. He is married to Ann Crooks and they have lived in Park City for thirty-five years.
