SUMMARY:Utah’s Gigantic Landslides (and their Smaller Cousin near Park City) Lecture given by Bob Biek
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will have Senior Scientist Bob Biek present a lecture called Utah’s Gigantic Landslides (and their Smaller Cousin near Park City) on Wednesday\, April 3rd from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. \nUtah is home to the largest terrestrial landslide known in the world\, a gigantic mass of volcanic rock in south-central Utah that collapsed and moved rapidly over the landscape 21 million years ago. We call that landslide the Markagunt gravity slide and announced its discovery in 2014. In 2016\, we discovered a second very large slide nearby. These enormous landslides—collectively larger than the state of Delaware—were the subject of an international field symposium in 2017. In many respects\, both slides are similar to the Silver Creek Chaos\, a 35 million-year-old landslide just east of Park City. That Chaos resulted from the collapse of one of many Cascade-like volcanoes that once towered over the Park City area. \nPark City lies in the now deeply eroded roots of ancient volcanoes\, the ultimate source of silver-lead-zinc deposits of the mining district\, and also the source of one fantastically large landslide whose remains are visible today north of Jordanelle Reservoir. Join Bob Biek\, Senior Scientist of the Utah Geological Survey\, to learn about this deep\, geologic history of the Park City area and the recent discovery of the world’s largest landslides. \nBob Biek is a Senior Scientist with the Utah Geological Survey’s Geologic Mapping Program\, having joined the group in 1996 after 4 years (5 winters!) as a mapping geologist with the North Dakota Geological Survey. Most of his geologic mapping is in southwestern Utah and along the Wasatch Front and back valleys. Bob received his B.A. in Geology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1983 and a M.S. in Geology from Northern Illinois University in 1987.

SUMMARY:Mining Methods of the Park City District lecture given by Mark Danninger
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining are welcoming Mark Danninger who will give a lecture called Mining Methods of the Park City District on Thursday\, March 21\, 2019 from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. For over 100 years the Park City area was a notable underground mining center that employed a variety of mining methods and allied technologies. As the industry moved from the individual prospector to industrial scale ventures\, the business of mining underwent advancements in ore body development\, rock haulage\, de-watering\, and ventilation to name a few. Power initially came from strong backs\, then horses and mules\, followed by steam and electricity. During the 100 or so years of mining in the District the basic approach remained the same but the way in which it was done became quite an enterprise of engineering marvels and capital investment. Mark Danninger is a Mining Engineer who graduated from Montana Tech in Butte\, MT. He has spent 30 years working in the mining and chemical processing sectors\, primarily in maintenance and project management. He is currently employed at Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper Mine in Salt Lake City.

SUMMARY:Metal Mining and the World War II Effort – Life and Times in a South American “Company Town” lecture given by Bonnie Bedford Park
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum is having Bonnie Bedford Park give a lecture called Metal Mining and the World War II Effort – Life and Times in a South American “Company Town” on Thursday\, March 7th from 5-6 p.m. at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. Inspired by old family letters and the research that went into her book Brides of 1941\, author Bonnie Bedford Park will share historical insights into an iconic company town in the Andes\, set above the world’s largest underground copper mine\, El Teniente. The Braden Copper Company (a subsidiary of Kennecott) was at the forefront of U.S. capitalization that developed the foreign-owned enclave where Park’s maternal grandfather accepted a job after graduating from the Columbia College School of Mines in 1911. In 1916\, during WWI\, her grandmother joined him as a new bride. \nFlash forward- The rush to marry gained impetus for Park’s mother and aunt\, depicted in Brides of 1941\, leading up to U.S. involvement in WWII. So did armament programs. When the demand for copper exceeded supply from domestic sources\, the War Production Board turned to South American mines. Today\, the abandoned mining town stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.\nBonnie and her husband of 36 years\, Pete\, have lived in their Park Meadows home since the 1970s. Pete is an enthusiastic collector of WWII memorabilia. Several copper-based collectibles (shell casings and communications equipment) will be on display. More information about her book can be found at bridesof1941.com.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Dust: A Shoshone Perspective on the Bear River Massacre given by Darren Parry
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will have a lecture given by Darren Parry called Voices from the Dust: A Shoshone Perspective on the Bear River Massacre. The lecture will be given on Wednesday\, January 16\, 2019 from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center Building located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. Darren will discuss Shoshone culture and history including how the relationship with the Mormon settlers started off well and deteriorated over time. He will talk about the Bear River Massacre and how that changed the Shoshone back then and take us to whom they are today. The Bear River Massacre was the largest massacre of Native Americans in the history of the United States and very few people know about it. Darren Parry is the Chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation. Darren serves on the Board of Directors for the American West Heritage Center\, in Wellsville\, Utah\, the Utah State Museum Board and serves on the Advisory Board of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. In 2017 he received the Esto Perpetua Award\, given to the person who preserves and promotes history in the State of Idaho. He is the only person from Utah to receive that award. He attended the University of Utah and Weber State University and received his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education\, with an emphasis on History. His passions in life are his family which includes his wife Melody and 9 children and 13 grandchildren. His other passion is his Tribal family. Darren wants to make sure that those who have gone before him are not forgotten. The story of the Bear River Massacre and the outcomes of that horrific event need to be remembered. He is currently working hard to raise money and awareness so an Interpretive Center can be built at the massacre site so the Shoshone perspective can be heard.

SUMMARY:Shiny Rocks to Silver Bars: Milling and Refining in Park City\, with Mining Engineer Donovan Symonds
DESCRIPTION:Shiny Rocks to Silver Bars: A Brief History and Explanation of Milling and Refining in Park City\, with Mining Engineer Donovan Symonds\, Thursday\, December 6 from 5-6pm \n \nHow were the ores mined in Park City turned into silver\, lead or gold bars? Why were they crushed and concentrated? Practical demonstrations and videos will explain the processes involved in sorting the ores into concentrates and tailings. \nEarly prospectors used simple sorting methods and these will be compared against the more complex processes used in the Silver King and California Comstock mills. The refining process was predominantly conducted in large furnaces in the Salt Lake valley but a brief description of what was involved will be presented. \nDonovan is a long time resident of Park City\, moving here in 1977. He is a retired consulting mining engineer specializing in mineral processing and holds a degree in mining engineering from Newcastle University in England and a PhD in gravity concentration from Nottingham University. He has enjoyed being a museum docent for about 8 years. \nThis program is held at the Education and Collection Center\, 2079 Sidewinder Drive.
