SUMMARY:Voices from the Dust: A Shoshone Perspective on the Bear River Massacre given by Darren Parry
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will have a lecture given by Darren Parry called Voices from the Dust: A Shoshone Perspective on the Bear River Massacre. The lecture will be given on Wednesday\, January 16\, 2019 from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center Building located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. Darren will discuss Shoshone culture and history including how the relationship with the Mormon settlers started off well and deteriorated over time. He will talk about the Bear River Massacre and how that changed the Shoshone back then and take us to whom they are today. The Bear River Massacre was the largest massacre of Native Americans in the history of the United States and very few people know about it. Darren Parry is the Chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation. Darren serves on the Board of Directors for the American West Heritage Center\, in Wellsville\, Utah\, the Utah State Museum Board and serves on the Advisory Board of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. In 2017 he received the Esto Perpetua Award\, given to the person who preserves and promotes history in the State of Idaho. He is the only person from Utah to receive that award. He attended the University of Utah and Weber State University and received his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education\, with an emphasis on History. His passions in life are his family which includes his wife Melody and 9 children and 13 grandchildren. His other passion is his Tribal family. Darren wants to make sure that those who have gone before him are not forgotten. The story of the Bear River Massacre and the outcomes of that horrific event need to be remembered. He is currently working hard to raise money and awareness so an Interpretive Center can be built at the massacre site so the Shoshone perspective can be heard.

SUMMARY:Shiny Rocks to Silver Bars: Milling and Refining in Park City\, with Mining Engineer Donovan Symonds
DESCRIPTION:Shiny Rocks to Silver Bars: A Brief History and Explanation of Milling and Refining in Park City\, with Mining Engineer Donovan Symonds\, Thursday\, December 6 from 5-6pm \n \nHow were the ores mined in Park City turned into silver\, lead or gold bars? Why were they crushed and concentrated? Practical demonstrations and videos will explain the processes involved in sorting the ores into concentrates and tailings. \nEarly prospectors used simple sorting methods and these will be compared against the more complex processes used in the Silver King and California Comstock mills. The refining process was predominantly conducted in large furnaces in the Salt Lake valley but a brief description of what was involved will be presented. \nDonovan is a long time resident of Park City\, moving here in 1977. He is a retired consulting mining engineer specializing in mineral processing and holds a degree in mining engineering from Newcastle University in England and a PhD in gravity concentration from Nottingham University. He has enjoyed being a museum docent for about 8 years. \nThis program is held at the Education and Collection Center\, 2079 Sidewinder Drive.
