SUMMARY:R.C. Chambers lecture given by Mark Danninger and Sandy Brumley
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will host a lecture called R.C. Chambers given by Mark Danninger and Sandy Brumley on Wednesday\, June 26\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nRobert Craig Chambers was a man of many connections. Perhaps most prominently\, he served as the agent of George Hearst in the acquisition of The Ontario Mine. He also used John Daly as an agent to acquire additional properties in the Park City mining districts. His connection to Hearst involved a swirl of others\, including Marcus Daley\, James Ben Ali Haggin and Lloyd Tevis. In Park City\, his connections included M.S. Aschheim\, Edward P. Ferry\, Albion Emery and his wife Susanna Bransford\, The Silver Queen. How did he use these connections and why do some say that he “double-crossed” The Silver Queen? \nMark is a mining engineer with over 30 years’ experience in open pit mining and chemical processing in maintenance\, process safety management\, and project management. He holds Bachelor’s Degrees in Mining Engineering and Welding Engineering\, as well as a Master’s Degree in Physical Metallurgy\, all from Montana Tech.\, in Butte\, Montana. He is a long-term resident of Park City. \nA mountain host and hiking guide at Park City Mountain Resort\, Sandy Brumley is a descendent of iron miners in Minnesota and an avid student of Park City History. This will be the fifth in a series of presentations he has made for the Museum. He is a hike leader for the Museum and a member of Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History.

SUMMARY:Ontario Ridge Hike with Heather Tourkin
DESCRIPTION:Ontario Ridge Hike with Heather Tourkin at 9:30 a.m. \nIntermediate loop hike\, 5+ miles long with 700 vertical feet of elevation. Since we end at the top of Main Street there will be lots of lunch options should folks be hungry. \nHikers should bring water\, sunscreen and snacks. \nThis will be a combination mine history & woodsy hike as there are a large number of buildings and artifacts\, including the Ontario drain tunnel and remnants of the High Line train track built in 1889 to serve the Ontario Mill. The hike will head up the Prospect Trail along Ontario Ridge (a single track with ruins of old mining cabins\, an abandoned DeSoto\, plus a string of towers for the Daly Aerial Tram—one of three such trams that once served the Park City Mines). We’ll follow it through alternating forests of Aspen and pine until we empty out onto the gravel two-track Ontario Ridge Road just under the Deer Valley Lady Morgan ski lift. We’ll take Empire Canyon to the Daly Mining Companies buildings\, comprised of the Judge Mining & Smelting Company Office structure(s)\, of which there are quite a few including an explosive bunker and the Alliance Watchman’s Cabin. Continuing down the canyon we’ll see more mining remnants including mine dumps for the American Flag and Massachusetts Mines. \nIf you are a member and would like to join us on one of these hikes\, please contact Diane Knispel\, at education@parkcityhistory.org with the following information: \n•	Which hike you would like to go on?\n•	Names of people going on the hike.\n•	Email address associated with your membership.\n•	A contact phone number (preferably a cell phone that you will have with you morning of the hike)\n•	Do you need a lift ticket for your hike or not? \nIf you are not a member and would like to join us for a hike\, please register as a member on our website at https://parkcityhistory.org/membership. SUMMARY:Closing the Silver King Coalition Mine Shaft lecture given by Brian Buck and Davey Jones
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will host a lecture called Closing the Silver King Coalition Mine Shaft given by Brian Buck and Davey Jones on Wednesday\, June 12 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org \nThe historic Silver King Coalition Mine building is located in Woodside Gulch across from the Bonanza lift. The shaft within the building was begun in 1889 and eventually completed to its total depth of 1\,300 feet. It was the only point of access for ore removal from the mine during all of its ore production\, closing down in 1952. In the 1990s\, the shaft was backfilled with earth but since then the backfill had settled leaving a large hole at the surface that was unsafe and threatening to collapse the steel headframe standing over the shaft. The Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History retained an engineering firm with experience in closing shafts to design a surface plug that would fill the hole and stabilize the headframe. The State of Utah\, Division of Oil\, Gas and Mining then hired a contractor to build the plug. The majority of the construction was done in October 2023 and will be completed in 2024. This was an important step in the long-term preservation plans for the mine building\, which will still take a number of years. The presentation by Brian Buck\, FOSMMH\, and Davey Jones\, UDOGM\, will discuss the work that was accomplished to close this shaft. \nBrian W. Buck has resided in Utah since 1973. He obtained a B.S. in Geology from the University of Wisconsin in 1973 and an M.S. in Geological Engineering from the University of Utah in 1976. He began a career working with the mining industry in 1976 and has experience in various positions including government\, a mining company\, and consulting. He has experience in all facets of mining including exploration\, mine design/operations\, permitting/government relations\, and final mine closure/reclamation. He has presented lectures and short courses on mining topics\, served as an expert witness related to mining practices\, and since 2015 has been a researcher of Park City mining history. He has given lectures on mining for the Park City Museum and written articles on mining for the Park Record newspaper. He is the Project Manager for the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History\, a committee of the Park City Museum\, and did their planning for closing the Silver King Coalition Mine shaft. Brian and his wife have lived in Park City since 2009. \nDavey Jones grew up in England and moved from England to Utah in 2014. He obtained a B.S. in Geography from Durham University in 2008. He began his career working in flood modeling\, producing flood models\, and running risk matrices on UK postcodes to aid the insurance and re-insurance industry in assessing property flood risk. In 2015\, with his move to Utah\, he moved into consulting where his primary focus was the production of FEMA flood maps. In this role\, he also carried out a number of field inventories of mining districts for Utah’s Division of Oil\, Gas and Mining’s (UDOGM) Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program (AMRP). Davey moved over to work for the AMRP in 2018 as a Project Manager where he has worked on several reclamation projects\, including the Defense Related Uranium Mines project\, which is a multi-agency project spearheaded by the Department of Energy. He has worked on reclamation projects all over Utah including the Wasatch Front\, Oquirrh Mountains\, and in the Moab locality. He is the UDOGM Project Manager for closing the Silver King Coalition Mine Shaft.

SUMMARY:The Wright Brothers and Their Flying Machines lecture given by Dorian DeMaio
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called The Wright Brothers and Their Flying Machines given by Dorian DeMaio on March 13 from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nThere is a common misperception that the Wright Brothers tinkered their airplane together in a bicycle shop and flew it into history\, realizing man’s long-held dream of flight. But this oversimplification diminishes the full scope of their achievements. Who were the Wright Brothers and how did they succeed where others failed? The real story is complex and a tribute to their inventive genius and persistence. \nTheir success was the product of applying a disciplined scientific approach involving years of thoughtful analysis\, experiment\, design\, test and then redesign that would make even Elon Musk envious. Not only did they risk their lives flight testing each of their new creations\, but they struggled to gain recognition and to preserve their legacy as the inventors of true flight. \nPark City resident and pilot Dorian De Maio flew his airplane to Dayton and Kitty Hawk to follow the Wrights’ journey of discovery in unraveling the mystery of flight. Join him in learning how the Wrights evolved their flying machines\, and in so doing\, developed aeronautical science as it is known today.

SUMMARY:Susanna Bransford\, Park City’s Silver Queen Lecture given by Sandy Brumley and Melissa Clark
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will host a lecture called Susanna Bransford\, Park City’s Silver Queen given by Sandy Brumley and Melissa Clark on Wednesday\, March 6\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nAmong the more distinguishing features of Park City history is the strength and character of its women. Their numbers were encouraged by the easy access provided by the Transcontinental Railroad and their character was exemplified by one Susanna Bransford\, a.k.a. The Silver Queen. \nLike many of the city’s heroes\, she arrived virtually penniless\, and soon rose to become one of the wealthiest members of the Gilded Age. She married a prominent early Parkite\, Albion Emery\, just six months after her arrival and before five years had passed\, the pair owned a one-fifth share of the highly successful Mayflower Group. \nHer subsequent three marriages were capped by nuptials with Russian Royalty\, elevating her to the legitimate title of “Her Royal Highness.” She spent virtually all of her fortune and died nearly penniless again in Rowayton\, Connecticut in 1942. Come hear the tail of her long and winding road to this tragic yet well-lived ending! \nMelissa Clark has been learning about Park City History since her first visit to Park City over 15 years ago. Now a resident\, she is a guide for the Main Street Walking Tours and Mine History Hikes in the summer for the Museum. She is also a member of Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History. A mountain host and hiking guide at Park City Mountain Resort\, Sandy Brumley is a descendent of iron miners in Minnesota and an avid student of Park City History. This will be the fifth in a series of presentations he has made for the Museum. He is a hike leader for the Museum and a member of Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED to February 7th! Flame of Ambition Lecture given by Steve Leatham
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called “Flame of Ambition” given by Steve Leatham on Wednesday\, February 7th\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nIn the early days of Park City’s mining history\, disputes often arose over the borderlines of mining claims. The resolution of these quarrels\, more often than not\, grew rapidly from heated discussions to violence and bloodshed; sometimes even murder. One such case involved a disagreement over the boundaries of the Henrietta\, Ontario\, and Great Eastern Claims. \nThis is the captivating story of an inaccurate Uintah Mining District survey that led from the shooting of a local miner in 1879 to a rare\, priceless\, 300 piece collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts found nowhere else but at today’s Utah Museum of Fine Arts. \nHear how the daughter of a hard-living\, Park City mine owning\, U. S. Marshal became a respected\, self-taught Egyptologist\, a ballerina\, an ambitious Hollywood costume designer\, a glamour icon of the 1920s\, and the wife of celebrity superstar Rudolph Valentino. \nSteve Leatham grew up in Park City and now spends his time researching\, writing\, and lecturing about his hometown’s history as a museum volunteer. A retired educator\, Steve enjoys teaching others about Park City’s colorful past.
