SUMMARY:Behind the Bars and Booze of Park City lecture given by Jane Perkins
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Behind the Bars and Booze of Park City given by Jane Perkins on Wednesday\, July 24\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nIn the early days of starting High West Distillery\, Jane & Dave were regularly asked “why do this in Utah where no one drinks!” In order to address that question\, they researched who came\, what they drank\, and where they drank. The discoveries were incorporated into the brand and eventually a book. Jane and David regularly met with Gary Kimball\, a legacy to Park City history as well as the author of the book Saloons of Old Park City. This lecture will explore the colorful history of the early saloons and drinks as well as their evolution as the city transitioned from silver to snow.

SUMMARY:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark
DESCRIPTION:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark at 9:30 a.m. \nThis hike is a 6 to 6.5 mile hike. It is long but not too steep. It is considered moderately difficult with an 1100-foot elevation gain. We will stop at the turn around point at Shadow Lake (by the Jupiter Lift base) for a 30-minute break for snack/lunch. Please bring water\, snacks and sunscreen! Because of our stops at mine sites allow 3.5 hours for this hike. \nIf you have a pass\, please bring it\, if not a lift ticket will be provided. We will be riding The Crescent Lift. We’ll start our hike at the top of the Crescent Lift. We’ll visit the King Con Ore Bin and see the area where the King Con Tram brought ore over the ridge. Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form the Silver King Consolidated\, or the King Con\, as it was known. \nWe’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon\, where we will see The California-Comstock Mine\, perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property. We’ll also hike close to the Thaynes Complex. Along the way we will talk about the old rail system that was used to move ore down the mountain.\nWe’ll hike the area of the 1883 Matt Brennan murder. He was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey being conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski. John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later. Was Black Jack the real killer? Dramatic speculation will ensue. \nWe’ll then hike up to Shadow Lake near the base of the Jupiter Lift for a snack/lunch break. After our break we will hike back to the Crescent chair for the ride down to the PC base!

SUMMARY:The Deserts of the Wests: Then and Now lecture given by James Cornett
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called The Deserts of the Wests: Then and Now given by Jim Cornett on August 7\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org/events. \nA just-completed research project shows how increasing aridity in the West is changing desert landscapes. Using repeat photography\, ecologist James W. Cornett spent four years relocating historical photo sites and taking new photographs from identical perspectives. \nThe results of the “then and now” images are often striking\, sometimes shocking. Cornett states\, “In just a half-century\, some landscapes experienced the vanishing of Joshua trees\, the complete demise of cacti\, or the shrinking of palm oases. Conversely\, colder and higher altitude environments in Utah seemed to suffer less or rebound over time. This was particularly true of areas dominated by juniper shrubs and trees.”\nCornett relied heavily on vintage automobiles and old-time dress in historical images to date photographs. He tracked climate data from the past\, recorded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)\, to evaluate how the climate has changed\, particularly from the 1980s onward. He then examined plants and vegetation changes and correlated those with climate parameters. His findings will be revealed in his presentation titled “The Deserts of the West: Then and Now.”\nCornett is the retired Director of Natural Sciences at the Desert Museum in Palm Springs\, California. The Joshua Tree National Park Association sponsors his research. He most recently appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America and is the author of dozens of books\, including Wildflowers of Park City and the Wasatch Mountains. His most recent publication\, The California Deserts: Then and Now\, will be on sale following his presentation.

SUMMARY:45th Star Conservation Preserve Hike with Wendy Fisher and Michael O'Malley-HIKE IS FULL
DESCRIPTION:HIKE IS FULL. You’ve heard about Deer Valley’s “Expanded Excellence” terrain. Did you know it comes with a 3\,100-acre conservation easement? We’ll learn about the 45th Star Conservation Preserve and the mining history and ecology within its borders on an August 14th museum hike. \nJoin Wendy Fisher\, executive director of Utah Open Lands\, and Michael O’Malley\, Deer Valley mountain host and museum researcher\, for a six-mile+ roundtrip hike with a 1\,200-feet vertical rise. We’ll follow the Ontario Canyon hiking trail up and then traverse partway on Bowhunter trail for a good view of the protected landscape. With a little bit of uphill work\, there’s an option to return to the Silver Lake area via the Sterling chairlift. \nLace up your hiking boots and bring the usual supplies of sunscreen\, water\, snacks\, headgear\, and questions. We’ll meet at the Ontario Mine Trailhead on Marsac Avenue (just downhill of Wheaton Way) with a planned departure of 8:30 am. The hike should take less than four hours\, though timing may vary with the chairlift download option – not to mention lunch on your own at the Royal Street Café! \nIf you are a member and would like to join us on one of these hikes\, please contact Diane Knispel\, at education@parkcityhistory.org with the following information: \n•	Which hike you would like to go on?\n•	Names of people going on the hike.\n•	Email address associated with your membership.\n•	A contact phone number (preferably a cell phone that you will have with you morning of the hike)\n•	Do you need a lift ticket for your hike or not? \nIf you are not a member and would like to join us for a hike\, please register as a member on our website at https://parkcityhistory.org/membership.
