DESCRIPTION:Serve Park City is Park City’s 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. This community day of service is being held on September 14\, 2024 and hosted by Park City Humanitarians\, a community group whose mission is to build community and connection through service. We are excited and grateful for the dozens of local nonprofits\, civic organizations\, businesses and faith groups who have helped provide service projects and are participating in this year’s community day of service. Thank you! \nWe invite you to signup to volunteer for one of over 30 service projects listed under Serve Park City on 9/14/24. The day will begin with a free breakfast from 8-9 a.m\, along with a 9/11 moment of remembrance\, followed by service projects all over the greater Park City area. Join our Research Coordinator Dalton Gackle to explore Rossie Hill and Prospect Ave/St\, and the architecture of approximately 30 homes along the way. The hike/walk will require climbing stairs\, briefly going along a trail\, and crossing Marsac Avenue twice. It is slightly more strenuous than past architecture tours. Expect the tour to take between 2 and 3 hours. Wear comfortable shoes for walking/hiking\, bring water and/or snacks\, and wear sunscreen. DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Is it Silver Creek or Poison Creek—Dealing with Mine Tailings in Park City given by Mike Nelson on Wednesday\, September 18\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nMike Nelson is a senior mining consultant at Stantec Engineering.  He previously taught mining engineering at the University of Utah\, and worked in the mining industry for Kennecott Copper\, Consolidation Coal\, and EIMCO Process Equipment Co.  Mike’s dad grew up on Ontario Avenue in Park City\, and worked at the Silver King mine while he went to college.  His grandfather worked in the Park City mines for over 30 years\, whenever he wasn’t “…laid off or on strike.” Mike is a Distinguished Member and Fellow of the Society for Mining\, Metallurgy\, and Exploration (SME)\, and in 2020 he received the General Patrick E. Connor Award for Service to Utah’s Mining Industry from the Utah Mining Association.

SUMMARY:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark
DESCRIPTION:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark at 10:30 a.m. \nThis hike is a 6 to 6.5 mile hike.  It is long but not too steep.   It is considered moderately difficult with an 1100-foot elevation gain.  We will stop at the turn around point at Shadow Lake (by the Jupiter Lift base) for a 30-minute break for snack/lunch.   Please bring water\, snacks and sunscreen!  Because of our stops at mine sites allow 3.5 hours for this hike.   \nIf you have a pass\, please bring it\, if not a lift ticket will be provided.  We will be riding The Crescent Lift.  We’ll start our hike at the top of the Crescent Lift.  We’ll visit the King Con Ore Bin and see the area where the King Con Tram brought ore over the ridge.  Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form the Silver King Consolidated\, or the King Con\, as it was known.   \nWe’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon\, where we will see The California-Comstock Mine\, perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property.  We’ll also hike close to the Thaynes Complex.  Along the way we will talk about the old rail system that was used to move ore down the mountain.\nWe’ll hike the area of the 1883 Matt Brennan murder.  He was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey being conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski.  John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later.  Was Black Jack the real killer?  Dramatic speculation will ensue.   \nWe’ll then hike up to Shadow Lake near the base of the Jupiter Lift for a snack/lunch break. DESCRIPTION:The Park City Museum will be hosting its annual Glenwood Cemetery Event with Ghosts on Saturday\, September 28\, 2024 from 10:45am-12pm and 12:45pm-2:00pm. Rain date for the event will be scheduled the next day on Sunday\, September 29th. Park City history will come alive through reenactors or ghosts in costume standing at various gravesites discussing life and death in the old historic mining town. Immigrants: People Who Made Park City Home will be the overall theme this year. \nThe tours will cost $20 per person and are appropriate for ages 10 years and older. This will be a fundraiser for the historic cemetery. Space is limited and reservations are required. Please visit Park City Museum’s website www.parkcityhistory.org for more information. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 5 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or so the Park City Museum will host a walk and talk exploring the former in town infrastructure of both the Union Pacific Railroad and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroads. Board member and Museum Researcher David Nicholas will be your “conductor” for the journey back in time.  \nBefitting an industrial mining town\, Park City featured two railroad yards\, two train stations and over fifteen (15) different sidings serving various industries. Rails originally reached Park City in 1880. The last train departed the summer of 1988.  \nAnother consideration\, we may have two guests join us who both lived in town when the railroad was vital to the prosperity of Park City.  \nPlease bring water\, sunscreen\, snacks\, and a hat. DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Not Who He Seems? given by David Nicholas and Stuart Stanek on Wednesday\, October 16\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nOn January 6 1936 a member of the Austrian Royal Family visited Park City. Count Felix von Schaffgotsch was handsome\, wealthy\, sophisticated and an avid skier.  Hired by Averell Harriman\, CEO and COB of the Union Pacific Railroad\, Felix was tasked with developing a grand North American Ski Resort – one without equal.  He would embark on a multi month 7000-mile journey in search of a winter “shanghai la”.  Park City was a candidate for this endeavor. However\, despite appearances Felix may have harbored ulterior motives.  Please join David Nicholas and Stuart Stanek as they discuss the enigmas surrounding Count von Schaffgotsch.  \nDavid Nicholas serves on the Board of the Park City Museum\, is interested in local history\, and frequently contributes to the “Way We Were” series. Also\, he conducts periodic lectures and historic hikes. His particular interests include but are not limited to Park City’s transportation history and local plane crashes.  \nStuart Stanek is a forty-year broadcasting veteran.  He managed one hundred and twenty-five radio stations in twenty-five different markets across the country. He served as a general manager and a regional President for iHeart Radio which is the nation’s largest broadcaster. He was involved in all facets of the business including sales\, programming\, operations\, and marketing.  He is married to Ann Crooks and they have lived in Park City for thirty-five years.

DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called The Glenwood Cemetery – Park City’s Storybook given by Barb Martz on Wednesday\, October 23\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nThe picturesque Glenwood Cemetery is the resting place for approximately 950 Park City pioneers. Come and learn more about its past and its future.  Hear about the creation of the Glenwood in 1885 by an association of Park City’s fraternal organizations\, the later abandonment\, and the 1980’s restoration by the few but dedicated members of the Park City Historical Society. See photos of the early Glenwood\, the damage done during the years of neglect\, and the restoration work which continues today. Find out about recent discoveries and plans for the future. \nYou will also learn about the people in the Glenwood. During the early mining days of Park City\, many people came from all over the world to seek their fortunes and help build this town. Life was very tough in those days with hardship\, suffering and heartbreak. You will be introduced to some of the Glenwood residents and hear their stories.  This lecture will provide a background of early burials in the Park City area and give you a glimpse of what life was like during the early mining days. It is intended to add a new dimension to your appreciation of life in Park City by learning about those people who walked our streets more than 100 years ago. \nBarbara Martz has lived in Park City since 1973. She has been a member and volunteer with the Park City Museum and Historical Society for 30 years and currently serves on the Board of Trustees. Her college bachelor’s degree is in history\, and she’s never lost interest in the days of yore. She loves to visit historic places and research historic events and people because she’s always wanted to be a time traveler.

SUMMARY:Aerial Mining Trams and Ski Lifts lecture given by Mark Danninger
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Aerial Mining Trams and Ski Lifts given by Mark Danninger on Wednesday\, November 13th\, 2024\, from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nAerial mining tram development in the late 19th century dramatically improved ore and mining supplies haulage in rugged and remote mining districts across the western U.S. and Canada.  The Park City mining district was one of many mining areas that benefited from this new technology with three operational systems by the mid-1920’s.  Several decades after aerial mining trams were a common sight in mountainous mining districts\, the technology was adapted to the growing sport of recreational skiing in many of the same mining communities.  The development and use of aerial mining trams and the adaptation and significant influence this had on the ski industry we know of today will be explored.    \nMark Danninger is a Mining Engineer who graduated from Montana Tech in Butte\, Montana with 30 years’ experience in the mining and chemical processing sectors.  He is currently a semi-retired consultant and a student of historic mining and railroading who also enjoys skiing and snowboarding.

SUMMARY:Reading Black Bear Behavior lecture given by Michael Rutter
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture entitled Reading Black Bear Behavior given by Michael Rutter on Wednesday\, December 4\, 2024\, from 5 – 6 p.m. at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org/events.  \nA fair amount of mythology surrounding black bears is not accurate. They are not psychotic blurs of fang and claw\, nor are they Disney caricatures. Rather\, black bears are highly intelligent apex predators—even if 85% of their diet is plant matter. It’s important to understand that their behavior is mostly predictable\, not random. Knowing how to “read a bear” will make the woods a safer place. These animals are complicated\, intelligent\, problem-solving creatures. Curiously\, during an encounter\, a black bear treats us as if we were another bear. They assess our intentions and our status in the ursine hierarchy. Are we dominate\, sub-dominate\, aggressive\, or passive? Using vocal and body language cues\, even pantomiming\, they reflect their own intentions and expect us to reply in kind.  \nMichael Rutter is an award-winning author and a wildlife photographer. He spends several months a year doing field research on grizzly and black bears. His outdoor essays and articles have been published from Yale University to Outdoor Life. He’s written forty books and textbooks. Michael is an adjunct professor of English at BYU\, a Christa McAuliffe Fellow\, and an AT&T Scholar.

SUMMARY:Edward Ferry Park City’s Capitalist lecture given by Sandy Brumley and Michael O’Malley
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will host a lecture called Edward Ferry Park City’s Capitalist given by Sandy Brumley and Michael O’Malley on Wednesday\, December 11\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org.   \nEdward P. Ferry was among the earliest arrivals to Park City in 1873.  Unlike many of the city’s heroes\, he arrived with substantial family wealth which he expertly parlayed into an even larger fortune.  Ferry and his partners obtained the title to the city’s townsite and attempted to sell lots to the miners and merchants who already occupied the land. This precipitated The Red Hot Riot\, one of the first major fracases in this wild west town. \nHe was the central character in a group that has been called “The Michigan Bunch.”  We’ll follow his exploits within The Marsac Companies\, through his development of the Crescent\, Woodside\, Mayflower and Silver King Mines. He was ultimately declared mentally incompetent and was sued by his family members for the manner in which he used the family wealth. Litigation ultimately made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court\, and set precedent for case law concerning using estate funds. \nA mountain host and hiking guide at Deer Valley and museum volunteer\, Michael O’Malley has been a student of Park City history since his first ski trip here in 1980. He is a frequent contributor to the “Way We Were” column in the Park Record.  He is a member of Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History.  A mountain host and hiking guide at Park City Mountain Resort\, Sandy Brumley is a descendent of iron miners in Minnesota and an avid student of Park City History.  This will be the sixth lecture in a series of presentations he has made for the Museum.  Sandy is a member of Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History and a hike leader in the summer for the Museum.

More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nUtah has long claimed to have the Greatest Snow on Earth—the state itself has even trademarked the phrase. In this talk\, University of Utah Atmospheric Sciences Professor Jim Steenburgh (a.k.a. “Professor Powder”) provides an insider’s view of Wasatch weather\, exposing the myths\, explaining the reality\, and revealing how and why Utah’s powder lives up to its reputation.  Drawing on material from his book\, Secrets of the Greatest Snow on Earth\, now in its second edition\, Steenburgh also provides a meteorological guide to mountain weather and snow climates around the world\, a deep dive into the remarkable avalanche history of Little Cottonwood Canyon\, and a look at the fate of skiing in a warming world.  \nJim Steenburgh is a professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah with teaching and research interests spanning mountain weather and climate\, winter storms\, and weather analysis and forecasting.  He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and a recipient of the University of Utah Distinguished Teaching Award.  He led the development of numerical and statistical forecast systems for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and served as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Innsbruck in 2019.  Known as “Professor Powder” on the social media platform X\, Steenburgh’s passions for meteorology\, snow\, and skiing are abundantly evident in his book Secrets of the Greatest Snow on Earth\, now in its 2nd Edition\, and his popular blog Wasatch Weather Weenies\, which has attracted more than 5 million page views from snow and mountain weather enthusiasts.

His journey in the industry began through his work with Burgex Inc. and Mojave Underground\, where he played a pivotal role in numerous mineral exploration and mining projects across the United States. Stuart’s hands-on experience in hundreds of projects has solidified his reputation as a thought leader\, bringing innovative services and forward-thinking ideas to the Burgex team.  \nBeyond his professional achievements\, Stuart has been deeply involved in preserving and promoting Utah’s mining history since 2007. He has led underground abandoned mine tours that offer unique insights into the state’s rich mining heritage and has become a sought-after speaker on Utah mining history. His expertise has been recognized at prominent venues\, including the Mining History Association and the Utah Heritage Foundation. SUMMARY:The Last Passenger Train to Park City-All Aboard! lecture given by David Nicholas and Stuart Stanek
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called The Last Passenger Train to Park City-All Aboard! given by David Nicholas and Stuart Stanek on Thursday\, February 27\, 2025 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  Please note the change of day for this lecture.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nFebruary 1971 witnessed the last passenger train “forever” to Park City.  The lecture chronicles the circumstances underpinning this event\, Park City railroad’s history\, the evolution of Ski Trains (both nationally and locally)\, the demise of intercity passenger service\, and the birth of Amtrak.  Besides vintage photographs depicting the town’s passenger train activity\, we have images from people who rode the last passenger train. Please join us!\nDavid Nicholas serves on the Board of the Park City Museum\, is interested in local history\, and frequently contributes to the “Way We Were” series. Also\, he conducts periodic lectures and historic hikes. His particular interests include but are not limited to Park City’s transportation history and local plane crashes.  \nStuart Stanek is a forty-year broadcasting veteran.  He managed one hundred and twenty-five radio stations in twenty-five different markets across the country. He served as a general manager and a regional President for iHeart Radio which is the nation’s largest broadcaster. He was involved in all facets of the business including sales\, programming\, operations\, and marketing.  He is married to Ann Crooks and they have lived in Park City for thirty-five years.

By the turn of the century\, city fathers began to seek ways to control the trade and consolidate the brothels into neighborhoods such as The Stockade in Salt Lake City. \nPark City had its own red-light district called “The Row\,” which was located along the north side of Deer Valley road in 16 separate “cribs” presided over for more than 20 years by a woman who came to be known as Mother Urban.  Who was this woman of mystery and how did she come to be called Mother?  Come learn more about Park City’s Mother Urban.  Sandy will be bringing in a special guest for the lecture. \nA mountain host and hiking guide at Park City Mountain Resort\, Sandy Brumley is a descendent of iron miners in Minnesota and an avid student of Park City History. DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called The Oregon Trail given by Dorian DeMaio on Wednesday\, March 12\, 2025 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \n“Westward Ho!” was the cry of hundreds of thousands of pioneers who traveled the Oregon Trail to seek a better life. Park City resident and pilot\, Dorian De Maio\, who previously presented his exploration of the Lewis and Clark Trail and Mountain Men era\, once again uses his airplane to follow the emigrants west in this third chapter of “How the West Was Won.”  Come join us to learn of the struggles and hardships of these intrepid men and women on the Oregon Trail!

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History for a mining history ski tour of Park City Mountain Resort to learn about our preservation projects – both current and past! On this tour you will visit stabilization projects that we have completed as well as learn about our rich mining history and our efforts to save the Silver King and Thaynes mine complexes. Here are the details for the tour: \n\nFor tours beginning before 1pm\, you will need a paid parking reservation at Park City Mountain or take public transit to the base area.\nThis tour is not for beginners as it contains runs on green and blue slopes\, but no black diamonds.\nThe tour will take 2 to 2.5 hours and we will plan for a restroom stop.\nBring your Epic Pass.  Thanks to Park City Mountain and EpicPromise\, we will provide those who do not have an Epic Pass a complimentary lift ticket.\n\nIf you would like to join us for this free ski tour please RSVP on this page with your email address. SUMMARY:Beer Bottles and Cartridges: Archaeology of Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City lecture given by Christopher Merritt
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Beer Bottles and Cartridges: Archaeology of Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City given by Christopher Merritt on Wednesday\, April 2\, 2025 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nAfter 162 years\, Fort Douglas is a fixture of Utah’s communities\, and while we know much about its operational history and the lives of famous people\, there is much to still uncover. With such a deep history\, many pieces of Fort Douglas’ history stay hidden under the ground\, waiting for an archaeologist (or a backhoe!) to expose it to sunlight again. Over the past thirty years\, archaeologists have explored many areas of the post’s history\, whether for the 2002 Olympics or as part of research endeavors. With each new discovery we learn more about this unique piece of Utah history.  \nChristopher Merritt has been a professional archaeologist for over 20 years\, working with the State of Utah for over 12 years\, and is now the State Historic Preservation Office. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Montana\, and he has worked in many western states focusing on the combination of history and archaeology\, to share new stories of the past.

DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Great Salt Lake Crossroads: Collapse or Comeback? given by Jake Dreyfous from Grow the Flow on Wednesday\, April 9\, 2025 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nAcross the globe\, saline lakes are collapsing due to human overconsumption of water\, leading to long-term devastation to the health\, economy\, ecology\, and culture of the adjacent communities. Out of more than 100 of these lakes across the globe\, no community has ever successfully saved their saline lake. Without immediate and sustained intervention\, Great Salt Lake—the largest saline lake in the western hemisphere—faces the same fate.  \nGreat Salt Lake’s disappearance is not a distant future. It is our present.  \nWhat is the future of Utah’s economy in a dust ridden Salt Lake Valley? Where will 12 million migratory birds travel when the ecosystem collapses? What of our beloved Greatest Snow on Earth? All these questions address what Utah stands to lose if Great Salt Lake disappears. But\, what do we stand to gain\, if we become the first community to save their saline lake? Explore these questions and the mysteries of Great Salt Lake with Jake Dreyfous\, Managing Director of Grow the Flow.  \nGrow the Flow is a political advocacy non-profit harnessing the political and public will to restore Great Salt Lake by empowering citizens\, identifying non-partisan solutions\, and leading collaborative efforts with NGOs\, the private sector\, community members\, institutions\, and government leaders to get water to the Lake.  \nJake Dreyfous is a fifth-generation Utahn and holds a degree in environmental studies and biology from Middlebury College. He is a passionate birdwatcher\, waterfowler\, skier\, and fly-fisherman. He has worked for The Nature Conservancy of Utah\, the Woodwell Climate Research Center’s community science initiative Science on the Fly\, Save the Bay\, and the Utah Rivers Council. Jake works as the Managing Director of Grow the Flow to ensure future generations of Utahns can enjoy Great Salt Lake and its ecosystem\, without the threat of its loss.
