Thank you! \nI will send you a confirmation email closer to the time with the place to meet and parking information. \nTwo Kings & a Queen hike with Sandy Brumley\, Tuesday\, August 19th at 9:45 A.M. \nThis hike will visit “The Two Kings Mines”: The Silver King Coalition Mine and Silver King Consolidated Mine.  We will ascend The Crescent Express Chairlift to the top of Crescent Ridge\, where we’ll view King Con Ore Bin\, discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form Silver King Consolidated\, or King Con\, as it was known. \nWe’ll then hike past the yurt and take a trail to the Silver Queen water towers where we’ll talk about the “famous” Susanna Bransford and how the water towers were stabilized. From there we continue the hike down to the Silver King Coalition Mine\, which is located at the base of the Bonanza Chairlift.  Here we’ll discuss: The Headframe and Steam Engine Buildings\, the boarding house and other aspects of the mine complex. \nAt this point we’ll head over to the trail above the Silver King Mill where we’ll discuss the function of a silver mine mill and its roll in refining to ore to obtain the valuable metallic elements sought by the mining company.  Since we’ll be near the Mayflower and Woodside Mines\, which were predecessors to The Silver King\, we’ll also discuss how activities in these mines lead to the eventual development of Park City’s largest mine.  We’ll also discuss the lawsuit where Susanna Bransford protected her fortune in a lawsuit with R.C. Chambers. \nWhen we wrap at the mill\, we’ll walk up a small hill to take the Payday Express Chairlift back to the Park City Mountain Village.  This hike will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours\, cover about 2.1 miles and require a climb of 322 vertical feet.

Thank you! \nI will send you a confirmation email closer to the time with the place to meet and parking information. \nSilver King Mine Hike August 29th with Heather Tourkin \nThis hike has a vertical elevation of nearly 1\,200 feet and is eight miles plus the walk between the parking lot at PCMR and the trailhead.  Definitely a strenuous hike\, but it is shaded\, filled with mining relics\, and the views of downtown Park City are gorgeous. \nThe hike follows the extant Silver King Aerial Tramway towers\, skirting the counterweight\, as we make our way up Sweeny’s Switchback/John’s Trail/Jenny’s Trail to the Silver King Mine Coalition Shaft House at the base of Bonanza lift.  Just east of the shaft house in Woodside Gulch is the Silver King Mill.  The Silver King Mine has the largest remaining collection of mining structures within the Park City Mining District\, so lots to look at and talk about here.  \nBring a snack to enjoy as we are looking at the mining structures\, water\, sunscreen and comfortable hiking shoes.  This hike will take 3.5 to 4 hours.

SUMMARY:Darren Parry Tending the Sacred Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a book signing with Darren Parry\, author of the book Tending the Sacred\, on Friday\, August 29th from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Park City Museum located at 528 Main Street.  Darren spoke about his book and philosophy of the environmental and spiritual wisdom during the lecture he held for the Museum in May called The Land is Alive: Indigenous Views on Nature.  His new book just recently was published. The Museum will have copies to buy that night.     \nTending the Sacred is a reflection on the deep environmental and spiritual wisdom held within Indigenous lifeways. Drawing from his Shoshone heritage and lived experience as a tribal elder and storyteller\, Darren Parry shares teachings that center on kinship\, humility\, and a sacred relationship with the Earth. The book challenges modern systems of consumption\, disconnection\, and dominance\, offering instead a worldview rooted in reciprocity and respect. It speaks to the urgency of our environmental crisis and the need to return to Indigenous values that see land not as property or resource\, but as a living relative.  This work is both a memoir and a call to action—urging readers to reimagine how we live on this planet by honoring ancestral knowledge and tending the sacred relationships that sustain life. \nDarren Parry is the former Chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation.  Darren serves on the Board of Directors for Utah Humanities and the PBS Utah. He attended the University of Utah and Weber State University and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. In 2024\, he received an Honorary PhD in Education from Utah State University.  Darren is the author of “The Bear River Massacre\, A Shoshone History” and teaches in the Environmental Humanities department at the University of Utah. He lectures around the country on Native American issues surrounding history and Indigenous views related to sustainability. He recently gave a lecture at the University of Copenhagen and spoke about Indigenous views to Climate and Environment.   His passions in life are his wife Melody\, 7 children and 17 grandchildren. His other passion is his Tribal family. He wants to make sure that those who have gone before him are not forgotten.

SUMMARY:Historical Park City Mining 101 lecture given by Donovan Symonds
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called Historical Park City Mining 101 given by Donovan Symonds on Wednesday September 3\, 2025 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nMining in Park City began in the early 1870s and continued for over a century. The numerous stories\, facts\, and mine names like Ontario\, Silver King\, Daly West\, Crescent\, Anchor and Mayflower (twice) can be daunting. The talk will discuss the mines\, miners and mills during this period and their importance to Park City. Silver was mined as well as lead\, zinc\, copper and gold. The talk will include a discussion of daily life underground\, and how did it change over time. Who were the miners? Were the mines unsafe\, and if so\, why did so many young men want to work there? What major hazards did they face: blasting\, drilling\, handling explosives\, riding the cage\, etc.? What were some of the other jobs at the mine- blacksmiths\, wood workers etc.?  What were the conditions like in the mines\, hot\, cold\, wet\, dry? Which were the top mine producers and what made them stand out?  \nThe presenter will offer insights from his experience working in a similar remote lead/zinc mine over sixty years ago. \nTopics of local interest that will be covered include terms such as widow maker\, assessment\, claim jumper\, tommy knockers\, single and double jack\, cousin jacks\, and salting\, among others.\nDonovan\, a mining engineer from England\, holds a B.S. in mining engineering from Newcastle University and a Ph.D. in mineral processing from Nottingham University. After emigrating to western Canada in 1971 and working in the Canadian mining industry\, he moved to Park City in 1977. He co-founded an international mining consulting company and has participated in various domestic and global mining projects. Donovan is a museum docent and helped start the Ski Mountain Mining History lecture series.

SUMMARY:Glenwood Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will be giving tours of the Historic Glenwood Cemetery located at the end of Silver King Drive on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. from June 24th to September 11th.  We have also added two Saturday dates this year including July 19th and August 9th from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.\, and three evenings including Monday\, July 7th\, Wednesday\, July 23rd\, and Thursday\, August 21st all starting at 6 p.m.  \nDiscover the history of the Cemetery and those residents who are buried there. Please register for a tour at www.parkcityhistory.org. Tours will be $15 per person. Please meet at Glenwood Cemetery by the gate\, bring a water bottle\, wear sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. Parking will be on Silver King Drive near the Cemetery. SUMMARY:Chinese Contributions to Park City During the Early Mining Era lecture given by Mark Danninger
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will host a lecture called Chinese Contributions to Park City During the Early Mining Era given by Mark Danninger on Wednesday\, September 10 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.  More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org.  \nChinese immigrants contributed in a substantial way to the establishment of Park City as a going concern in the late 1800’s.  By 1893 10% of the city’s population was Chinese with residents living in a small “Chinatown” district along the lower half of Swede Alley.  Today’s talk will explore what brought Chinese immigrants to Park City\, what business opportunities existed for them (and did not)\, and what became of the Chinese community in subsequent years.     \nMark is a mining engineer with over 30 years’ experience in underground mining\, maintenance\, welding\, project management\, safety and consulting. He holds Bachelor’s Degrees in Mining Engineering and Welding Engineering\, as well as a Master’s Degree in Physical Metallurgy\, all from Montana Tech.\, in Butte\, Montana. His is a long-term resident of Park City.
