SUMMARY:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark August 24th at 9:30 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:If you are a member and would like to join us on one of these hikes\, please contact Diane Knispel\, at education@parkcityhistory.org with the following information: \n•	Names of people going on the hike.\n•	Email address associated with your membership.\n•	A contact phone number (preferably a cell phone that you will have with you morning of the hike)\n•	Do you need a lift ticket for your hike or not? \nIf you are not a member and would like to join us for a hike\, please register as a member on our website at https://parkcityhistory.org/membership. Once you are registered\, please contact Diane Knispel with the information needed that is listed above. Thank you! \nI will send you a confirmation email closer to the time with place to meet and parking information. \nThaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark Dates: July 20th and August 24th at 9:30 a.m. \nThis hike is a 6 to 6.5 mile hike. It is long but not too steep. It is considered moderately difficult with a 575 foot elevation gain. We will stop at the turn around point at Shadow Lake (by the Jupiter Lift base) for a 30 minute break for snack/lunch. Please bring water\, snacks and sunscreen! Because of our stops at mine sites allow 3.5 hours for this hike. \nPark in the lot at the base of PCMR\, walk up to plaza by the PCMR ticket window. We will meet by the picnic tables. If you have a pass please bring it\, if not a lift ticket will be provided. We will be riding The Crescent Lift. We’ll start our hike at the top of the Crescent Lift. We’ll visit the King Con Ore Bin and see the area where the King Con Tram brought ore over the ridge. Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form the Silver King Consolidated\, or the King Con\, as it was known. \nWe’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon\, where we will see The California-Comstock Mine\, perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property. We’ll also hike close to the Thaynes Complex. Along the way we will talk about the old rail system that was used to move ore down the mountain.\nWe’ll hike the area of the 1883 Matt Brennan murder. He was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey being conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski. John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later. Was Black Jack the real killer? Dramatic speculation will ensue. \nWe’ll also see small remnants of the Crescent Mine – originally developed by John Daly under contract to a company organized by Ed Ferry. We’ll then hike up to Shadow Lake near the base of the Jupiter Lift for a snack/lunch break. After our break we will hike back to the Crescent chair for the ride down to the PC base! \nClosing date and time for signing-up for the August 24th hike: August 10th at 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Bartley McDonough\, Labor Battles\, and the Building of the Park City Miners Hospital Lecture given by Roger McDonough
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History are hosting a lecture called Bartley McDonough\, Labor Battles\, and the Building of the Park City Miners Hospital given by Roger McDonough on August 30th from 5-6 p.m. The lecture will be held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nBartley McDonough was born in Connemara in the West of Ireland in 1854. As a teenager\, he emigrated to the United States and worked as a miner in various places before settling in Park City. In Virginia City\, Nevada\, Bodie\, California\, and ‘The Park\,’ Bartley was deeply active in the struggle for workers’ rights; and as president of the local chapter of the Western Federation of Miners\, he helped champion the creation of the Park City Miners Hospital – a union-built-and-operated facility. But the struggle over whether the hospital would be built hints at larger\, more heated labor battles playing out across the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. \nRoger McDonough has worked as a journalist in Utah for more than two decades. For some years he contributed to the Salt Lake Tribune’s “Living History” column and later worked for KCPW Public Radio\, where he hosted various news\, environment and history programs. As Bartley’s great-grandson\, Roger says he has spent a lot of time in “the historical trenches\,” trying to unearth what he can about the story of his Irish ancestors who came to Park City. In addition to his lecture\, Roger will share tips on some of the tools he has used to do his research.

Since we end at the top of Main Street there will be lots of lunch options should folks be hungry. \nHikers should bring water\, sunscreen and snacks. \nThis will be a combination mine history & woodsy hike as there are a large number of buildings and artifacts\, including the Ontario drain tunnel and remnants of the High Line train track built in 1889 to serve the Ontario Mill. The hike will head up the Ontario Ridge Trail (a single track with ruins of old mining cabins\, an abandoned DeSoto\, plus a string of towers for the Daly Aerial Tram—one of three such trams that once served the Park City Mines). Once we intersect with the Empire Link trail we’ll follow it through alternating forests of Aspen and pine until we empty out on a gravel two-track just under the Deer Valley Lady Morgan ski lift. We’ll head down Empire Canyon to the Daly Mining Companies buildings\, comprised of the Judge Mining & Smelting Company Office structure(s)\, of which there are quite a few including an explosive bunker and a watchman’s house. Continuing down the canyon we’ll see more mining remnants including mine dumps for the American Flag and Massachusetts Mines. \nClosing date and time for signing-up for the hike: September 4th at 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Silver King Mine Hike September 27 at 9:00 a.m. with Heather Tourkin
DESCRIPTION:If you are a member and would like to join us on this hike\, please contact Diane Knispel\, at education@parkcityhistory.org with the following information: \n•	Names of people going on the hike.\n•	Email address associated with your membership.\n•	A contact phone number (preferably a cell phone that you will have with you morning of the hike). \nThis hike has a vertical elevation of nearly 1\,400 feet and is 6.5 to 7 miles long\, although there is an option to take the Town Lift back down to Main Street. Definitely a strenuous hike\, but it is treed and has lovely views of downtown Park City. \nThe hike follows the extant Silver King tram towers\, skirting the counterweight\, as we make our way up Sweeny’s Switchback/John’s Trails to the Silver King Shaft House at the base of Bonanza Lift. Just below the shaft house in Woodside Gulch is the Silver King Mill. The Silver King Mine has the largest remaining collection of mining structures within the Park City Mining District\, so lots to look at and talk about. \nBring a snack to enjoy as we’re looking at the mining structures\, water and sunscreen. The hike will take about 3.5 hours.
