SUMMARY:Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark August 24th at 9:30 a.m.
DESCRIPTION:If you are a member and would like to join us on one of these hikes\, please contact Diane Knispel\, at education@parkcityhistory.org with the following information: \n•	Names of people going on the hike.\n•	Email address associated with your membership.\n•	A contact phone number (preferably a cell phone that you will have with you morning of the hike)\n•	Do you need a lift ticket for your hike or not? \nIf you are not a member and would like to join us for a hike\, please register as a member on our website at https://parkcityhistory.org/membership. Once you are registered\, please contact Diane Knispel with the information needed that is listed above. Thank you! \nI will send you a confirmation email closer to the time with place to meet and parking information. \nThaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark Dates: July 20th and August 24th at 9:30 a.m. \nThis hike is a 6 to 6.5 mile hike. It is long but not too steep. It is considered moderately difficult with a 575 foot elevation gain. We will stop at the turn around point at Shadow Lake (by the Jupiter Lift base) for a 30 minute break for snack/lunch. Please bring water\, snacks and sunscreen! Because of our stops at mine sites allow 3.5 hours for this hike. \nPark in the lot at the base of PCMR\, walk up to plaza by the PCMR ticket window. We will meet by the picnic tables. If you have a pass please bring it\, if not a lift ticket will be provided. We will be riding The Crescent Lift. We’ll start our hike at the top of the Crescent Lift. We’ll visit the King Con Ore Bin and see the area where the King Con Tram brought ore over the ridge. Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form the Silver King Consolidated\, or the King Con\, as it was known. \nWe’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon\, where we will see The California-Comstock Mine\, perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property. We’ll also hike close to the Thaynes Complex. Along the way we will talk about the old rail system that was used to move ore down the mountain.\nWe’ll hike the area of the 1883 Matt Brennan murder. He was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey being conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski. John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later. Was Black Jack the real killer? Dramatic speculation will ensue. \nWe’ll also see small remnants of the Crescent Mine – originally developed by John Daly under contract to a company organized by Ed Ferry. We’ll then hike up to Shadow Lake near the base of the Jupiter Lift for a snack/lunch break. After our break we will hike back to the Crescent chair for the ride down to the PC base! \nClosing date and time for signing-up for the August 24th hike: August 10th at 5 p.m.

In Virginia City\, Nevada\, Bodie\, California\, and ‘The Park\,’ Bartley was deeply active in the struggle for workers’ rights; and as president of the local chapter of the Western Federation of Miners\, he helped champion the creation of the Park City Miners Hospital – a union-built-and-operated facility. But the struggle over whether the hospital would be built hints at larger\, more heated labor battles playing out across the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. \nRoger McDonough has worked as a journalist in Utah for more than two decades. For some years he contributed to the Salt Lake Tribune’s “Living History” column and later worked for KCPW Public Radio\, where he hosted various news\, environment and history programs. As Bartley’s great-grandson\, Roger says he has spent a lot of time in “the historical trenches\,” trying to unearth what he can about the story of his Irish ancestors who came to Park City. In addition to his lecture\, Roger will share tips on some of the tools he has used to do his research.

Definitely a strenuous hike\, but it is treed and has lovely views of downtown Park City. \nThe hike follows the extant Silver King tram towers\, skirting the counterweight\, as we make our way up Sweeny’s Switchback/John’s Trails to the Silver King Shaft House at the base of Bonanza Lift. Just below the shaft house in Woodside Gulch is the Silver King Mill. The Silver King Mine has the largest remaining collection of mining structures within the Park City Mining District\, so lots to look at and talk about. \nBring a snack to enjoy as we’re looking at the mining structures\, water and sunscreen. The hike will take about 3.5 hours.

SUMMARY:The B-18 Bomber Crash on Iron Mountain Part Four given by Steve Leatham and David Nicholas
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called The B-18 Bomber Crash on Iron Mountain Part Four given by Steve Leatham and David Nicholas on Wednesday\, October 18th from 5-6 p.m. The lecture is being held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. \nSteve Leatham and David Nicholas return to the Park City Museum lecture circuit with their “fourth” iteration regarding the November 17th\, 1941 B-18 bomber crash on Iron Mountain. As in previous lectures\, Oz Crosby and Rory Murphy will join Leatham and Nicholas for this discussion. Their continuing research now spans five years. \nWhat’s new in version 4.0? Nicholas will review the US political climate circa 1935 to 1941 including but not limited to Nazi sympathizers\, the Neutrality Acts\, isolationist policies\, America First rhetoric and Hitler’s (deranged) belief that the US would support his ambitions. Leatham will discuss the fascinating connection between Park City resident Ellwood Hyrum Offret (USN) and a Fort Douglas based airmen with intimate knowledge of the B-18 crash. Together they would play vital roles in a daring rescue operation in the Philippine Islands only four months after the Park City crash. For his bravery and service Chief Machinist Mate Offret would be awarded the Silver Star. \nQuestions? Please contact Diane Knispel at education@parkcityhistory.org.

SUMMARY:The Importance of Cornish Miners in early Park City Mining given by Donovan Symonds and Chett Boxley
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History are hosting a lecture called The Importance of Cornish Miners in early Park City Mining given by Donovan Symonds and Chett Boxley on Wednesday\, October 25th from 5-6 p.m. at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nIn the early 1800’s the English counties of Cornwall and Devon produced over half of the world’s output of copper and tin. This was the world center of underground hard rock mining technology and Cornish miners\, often called “Cousin Jacks\,” were sought after to help develop\nthe rapid expansion of underground mines in the early West. They were the most technically\nskilled in the field. Many Cousin Jacks found their way to Park City and quickly assumed senior\ntechnical and managerial roles. The lecture will explain the early history of hard rock mining and water pumping in Cornwall\, and why the terms jack hammer\, jack leg drill\, single jack and\ndouble jack all relate to the skilled Cornish miners. The origin of the famous Cornish pump will\nbe discussed. \nThe second part of the talk will give brief histories of the lives of some of the Cornish miners\nand their spouses\, referred to as “Cousin Jenny\,” who ended up in Park City\, many of whom are\nburied in the Glenwood cemetery.

SUMMARY:A Tapestry of Western Wildlife: History and Lore Zoom lecture given by Lee Silliman
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a Zoom lecture called A Tapestry of Western Wildlife: History and Lore given by curator Lee Silliman on Wednesday\, November 8 from 5-6 p.m. To sign-up for the lecture\, please contact Diane Knispel at education@parkcityhistory.org and she will send you a link. Denizens: Wildlife on the Western Frontier exhibition will be displayed at the Park City Museum from November 4\, 2023 through January 7\, 2024. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nPresented in conjunction with an exhibit of vintage wildlife prints entitled Denizens: Wildlife on the Western Frontier\, this lecture will vividly sketch portraits of the diverse fauna which were abundant on the Great Plains and in the Rocky Mountains during the frontier era. Through vintage imagery and nineteenth century first person narratives\, Silliman will offer samplings of the history and lore of the American bison\, grizzly bear\, antelope\, wolf\, wild horses\, and other wildlife species which fascinated early westerners. Emphasis will be placed upon unusual characteristics and dramatic encounters with people. Also\, viewers will see a collection of unusual artworks drawn from the presenter’s personal print collection and rare books. SUMMARY:POSTPONED to February 7th! Flame of Ambition Lecture given by Steve Leatham
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called “Flame of Ambition” given by Steve Leatham on Wednesday\, February 7th\, 2024 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Park City Museum Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nIn the early days of Park City’s mining history\, disputes often arose over the borderlines of mining claims. The resolution of these quarrels\, more often than not\, grew rapidly from heated discussions to violence and bloodshed; sometimes even murder. One such case involved a disagreement over the boundaries of the Henrietta\, Ontario\, and Great Eastern Claims. \nThis is the captivating story of an inaccurate Uintah Mining District survey that led from the shooting of a local miner in 1879 to a rare\, priceless\, 300 piece collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts found nowhere else but at today’s Utah Museum of Fine Arts. \nHear how the daughter of a hard-living\, Park City mine owning\, U. S. Marshal became a respected\, self-taught Egyptologist\, a ballerina\, an ambitious Hollywood costume designer\, a glamour icon of the 1920s\, and the wife of celebrity superstar Rudolph Valentino. \nSteve Leatham grew up in Park City and now spends his time researching\, writing\, and lecturing about his hometown’s history as a museum volunteer. A retired educator\, Steve enjoys teaching others about Park City’s colorful past.
