We will stop at the turnaround point at Shadow Lake (by the Jupiter Lift base) for a 30-minute break for snack/lunch. Please bring water\, snacks and sunscreen! Because of our stops at mine sites allow 3.5 hours for this hike. \nIf you have a pass\, please bring it\, if not a lift ticket will be provided. We will be riding The Crescent Lift. We’ll start our hike at the top of the Crescent Lift. We’ll visit the King Con Ore Bin and see the area where the King Con Tram brought ore over the ridge. Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form the Silver King Consolidated\, or the King Con\, as it was known. \nWe’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon\, where we will see The California-Comstock Mine\, perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property. We’ll also hike close to the Thaynes Complex. Along the way we will talk about the old rail system that was used to move ore down the mountain. \nWe’ll hike the area of the 1883 Matt Brennan murder. He was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski. John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later. Was Black Jack the real killer? Dramatic speculation will ensue. \nWe’ll then hike up to Shadow Lake near the base of the Jupiter Lift for a snack/lunch break. After our break we will hike back to the Crescent chair for the ride down to the PC base!

SUMMARY:The Opera in Utah lecture given by Benjamin Beckman
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture called The Opera in Utah given by Benjamin Beckman on Wednesday\, August 13\, 2025 from 5-6 p.m. held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nWhile we often think of opera as a tradition rooted in Europe\, opera has a long and rich history in Utah. Its presence in the Mountain West stretches back over 150 years\, from early pioneer performances to grand touring productions that brought world-renowned artists to the region. Utah’s opera legacy includes forgotten opera houses\, groundbreaking broadcasts\, and internationally celebrated singers who once called the state home. Join us to learn more about the fascinating history of opera in Utah and explore how this vibrant art form continues to evolve in the state\, including with the newly founded Park City Opera. \nBenjamin Beckman is a composer\, conductor\, and pianist who serves as the Artistic Director of Park City Opera\, a newly-founded opera company serving Park City and the surrounding communities. He studied at Yale and the University of Southern California\, and has worked with opera companies around the US\, including Sarasota Opera\, Festival Napa Valley\, Pacific Opera Project\, The Opera Guild of Palm Springs\, Opera Company of Middlebury Vermont\, and Chicago Summer Opera. He will be conducting Park City Opera’s inaugural mainstage production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville at the Park City Library on August 24th\, and at the Premiere Park City on August 29th and 30th.

We will ascend The Crescent Express Chairlift to the top of Crescent Ridge\, where we’ll view King Con Ore Bin\, discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form Silver King Consolidated\, or King Con\, as it was known. \nWe’ll then hike past the yurt and take a trail to the Silver Queen water towers where we’ll talk about the “famous” Susanna Bransford and how the water towers were stabilized. From there we continue the hike down to the Silver King Coalition Mine\, which is located at the base of the Bonanza Chairlift. Here we’ll discuss: The Headframe and Steam Engine Buildings\, the boarding house and other aspects of the mine complex. \nAt this point we’ll head over to the trail above the Silver King Mill where we’ll discuss the function of a silver mine mill and its roll in refining to ore to obtain the valuable metallic elements sought by the mining company. Since we’ll be near the Mayflower and Woodside Mines\, which were predecessors to The Silver King\, we’ll also discuss how activities in these mines lead to the eventual development of Park City’s largest mine. We’ll also discuss the lawsuit where Susanna Bransford protected her fortune in a lawsuit with R.C. Chambers. \nWhen we wrap at the mill\, we’ll walk up a small hill to take the Payday Express Chairlift back to the Park City Mountain Village. This hike will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours\, cover about 2.1 miles and require a climb of 322 vertical feet.
