SUMMARY:Explosion in the Daly West\, July 15\, 1902--Not a Scrap of His Body Was Found Anywhere given by Dr. Mike Nelson
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History are hosting a lecture called Explosion in the Daly West\, July 15\, 1902–Not a Scrap of His Body Was Found Anywhere given by Dr. Mike Nelson on Wednesday\, July 26th from 5-6 p.m. at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nExplosives were invented in 9th Century China during the late Tang dynasty and were used extensively for warfare. Their first use in mining was in 1627\, at a mine in Stenmitz\, Hungary.\nBlasting was a much more effective way to break rock\, and the introduction of the steam drill increased the overall efficiency of the mining process. But blasting came with serious risks. Injuries and fatalities were common. On July 15\, 1902\, 34 miners were killed following a magazine explosion in the Daly West and Ontario Silver Mines in Park City. The magazine\, located in the Daly West mine\, exploded after a miner\, John Burgy\, entered carrying a lit candle. The presentation will review the use of explosives in mining and will then look at the 1902 disaster in detail\, examining the rescue response and the coverage of the incident in the local and national press. \nMichael G. (Mike) Nelson is a professor of mining engineering at the University of Utah. He was Chair of the Department of Mining Engineering from 2008 to 2019. He was previously professor of mining engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He holds a B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering and an M.S. in applied physics\, both from the University of Utah\, and a Ph.D. in mining engineering from West Virginia University. Mike has worked for Kennecott Copper\, Westinghouse Electric\, Consolidation Coal\, and EIMCO Process Equipment. Mike has holds nine patents in mining in mineral processing. He is co-author of the book\, History of Flotation\, and has contributed to many other technical books. He has given invited short courses in the U.S.\, Australia\, Ecuador\, and India\, and has been an expert witness in the U.S. and Australia. Mike’s dad\, Tom Nelson\, grew up in grew up in Wasatch and Summit County\, and graduated from Park City High School in 1946. Tom’s dad\, Carl\, worked top car at the Silver King\, and Tom worked weekends\, holidays\, and vacations at the Silver King while he was studying at B.Y.U. to become a high school band teacher.

Thank you! \nI will send you a confirmation email closer to the time with place to meet and parking information. \nThaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark Dates: July 20th at 9:30 a.m. \nThis hike is a 6 to 6.5 mile hike. It is long but not too steep. It is considered moderately difficult with a 575 foot elevation gain. We will stop at the turn around point at Shadow Lake (by the Jupiter Lift base) for a 30 minute break for snack/lunch. Please bring water\, snacks and sunscreen! Because of our stops at mine sites allow 3.5 hours for this hike. \nPark in the lot at the base of PCMR\, walk up to plaza by the PCMR ticket window. We will meet by the picnic tables. If you have a pass please bring it\, if not a lift ticket will be provided. We will be riding The Crescent Lift. We’ll start our hike at the top of the Crescent Lift. We’ll visit the King Con Ore Bin and see the area where the King Con Tram brought ore over the ridge. Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines\, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form the Silver King Consolidated\, or the King Con\, as it was known.\nWe’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon\, where we will see The California-Comstock Mine\, perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property. We’ll also hike close to the Thaynes Complex. Along the way we will talk about the old rail system that was used to move ore down the mountain. \nWe’ll hike the area of the 1883 Matt Brennan murder. He was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey being conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski. John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later. Was Black Jack the real killer? Dramatic speculation will ensue.\nWe’ll also see small remnants of the Crescent Mine – originally developed by John Daly under contract to a company organized by Ed Ferry. We’ll then hike up to Shadow Lake near the base of the Jupiter Lift for a snack/lunch break. After our break we will hike back to the Crescent chair for the ride down to the PC base! \nClosing date and time for signing-up for the July 20th hike: July 17th at 5 p.m.
