Geology of Our Treasure Mountain Home, with Sherie Harding, Thursday November 8, from 5-6pmThe geologic story behind our treasure mountain home is varied, lengthy, and at times tumultuous. This story takes you back some 300 million years, which is the age of the mineralized rock that shaped Park City’s history.Chapter 1 takes place in warm shallow waters where layer upon layer of sediment collected. Today these tilted layers of sedimentary rock intimately influence your hiking, biking, and skiing. A dynamic Chapter 2 encompasses the building of the Rocky Mountains, which only took about 120 million years and uplifted the mountains around us. Chapter 3 is an essential episode where the injections of magma produced explosive volcanoes and crystalline rock with hot solutions that concentrated silver, lead and zinc. The mineral rich and steamy solutions migrated and dissolved their way into the old sedimentary rocks of the Wasatch Back around Park City. Then, discovery, prospecting, and millionaires turned this into the west’s greatest silver camp! This program is held at the Education and Collection Center, 2079 Sidewinder Drive.—Thank you to Donovan Symonds and our Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History committee for organizing this program.
