Mines to Moguls
Designed by local artist Peg Bodell
"Park City's Town Lift & ski bridge, in the heart of Park City's Historic District, illustrates Park City's transition from "Mines to Moguls". When ore prices plummeted in the 1950s with no signs of recovery, United Park City Mines Co. recognized the new trend of travel and vacationing could be a new source of income. In 1962, Jack Gallivan, Utah newspaper publisher, visited the White House and convinced President John F. Kennedy, to approve a low-interest federal loan to UPCM for development of a ski resort, igniting Park City's transition to a ski town.
The resort opened on December 21, 1963 as Treasure Mountains, boasting the longest gondola in the US. By 1996, Park City Mountain Resort had grown to eight peaks and nine bowls, with 3,300 acres of skiing and 16 chairlifts. On September 11, 2014, Vail Resorts purchased Park City Mountain Resort for $182.5 million, and later combined neighboring Canyons Resort totaling 7,300 skiable acres.
Today's summer views on the Town Lift include the Silver King aerial tramway towers, Quit'N Time & Creole ski runs, and native Columbine plants growing on the mountain side.
