August 23, 2018
Back by popular demand, Pat Pond and Robin Filion are preparing another gourmet lunch for the August 23 History Hike. This time we’ll picnic in style at the Thaynes Conveyor. The menu includes: grilled flank steak and portobello mushrooms, crusty rolls, delicious salads and sumptuous desserts.
The hike starts with a shuttle to Guardsman Pass. Guest Guides Hope and Sanford Melville will lead us to Jupiter ore bin, Shadow Lake, the California Comstock Mill and down to the Thaynes Conveyor. There we’ll meet contractor Clark Martinez and learn about the extensive work needed to stabilize the long conveyor between the Thaynes shaft and the huge waste rock pile.
The hike and lunch will take around 5 hours, returning to the base of Park City Mountain Resort via the Crescent Lift about 2:30pm. Reservations are required.
All proceeds benefit the Thaynes Conveyor stabilization efforts, a partnership project of Park City Mountain Resort and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History, a committee of the Park City Museum. Silver mines once dotted the mountains surrounding Park City and a labyrinth of mine tunnels extend more than 1,000 miles under Park City’s trails. Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History seek to stabilize and preserve the legacy of Park City’s historic mining structures for future residents and visitors alike.
This hike is at capacity! Please join us for our next hike in October.
