Historic Ontario Ridge/Empire Link Hike September 9, 2023 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. led by Christie Dilloway
Intermediate loop hike, 5+ miles long with 700 vertical feet of elevation. Since we end at the top of Main Street there will be lots of lunch options should folks be hungry.
Hikers should bring water, sunscreen and snacks.
This will be a combination mine history & woodsy hike as there are a large number of buildings and artifacts, including the Ontario drain tunnel and remnants of the High Line train track built in 1889 to serve the Ontario Mill. The hike will head up the Ontario Ridge Trail (a single track with ruins of old mining cabins, an abandoned DeSoto, plus a string of towers for the Daly Aerial Tram—one of three such trams that once served the Park City Mines). Once we intersect with the Empire Link trail we’ll follow it through alternating forests of Aspen and pine until we empty out on a gravel two-track just under the Deer Valley Lady Morgan ski lift. We’ll head down Empire Canyon to the Daly Mining Companies buildings, comprised of the Judge Mining & Smelting Company Office structure(s), of which there are quite a few including an explosive bunker and a watchman’s house. Continuing down the canyon we’ll see more mining remnants including mine dumps for the American Flag and Massachusetts Mines.
Closing date and time for signing-up for the hike: September 4th at 5 p.m.
