Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will present a ZOOM lecture called Raising the Daly West Headframe given by Brian Buck, Doug Ogilvy, and Steve Issowits on Wednesday, July 13th from 5-6 p.m. Please register for the lecture at www.parkcityhistory/events.
The Daly West mine was started by John J. Daly in the early 1890s and grew into one of the most notable mining operations in the U.S. West. It was accessed by a 2,100-foot-deep shaft but eventually was connected underground to multiple other Park City mines. A steel shaft headframe replaced the wood headframe in 1914 and stood over the shaft for over a century until it collapsed into the shaft in May 2015. Since then the Park City community has wondered what will happen the famous headframe. The Park City Municipal Government, Deer Valley Resort, and Empire Pass Master Owners Association cooperated to fix the damaged headframe and raise it up again near the original shaft location. This talk tells the story of raising the Daly West headframe. The talk is a collaborative effort of Brian Buck a local geologist and Doug Ogilvy from the Empire Pass Master Owners Association and Steve Issowits, formerly from Deer Valley Resort.
