Thaynes Canyon Hike with Melissa Clark and Sandy Brumley August 24th at 10 a.m.
Park in the lot at the base of PCMR, where we’ll catch The Crescent Lift. We’ll view the King Con Tram Counterweight from the chairlift and then take a short walk where we can view King Con Ore Bin and where the King Con Tram, one of three aerial trams built to serve Park City mines, came over the ridge. Here we’ll also discuss the history of the Crescent and Bogan Mines, which were combined by Solon Spiro to form Silver King Consolidated, of King Con, as it was known.
We’ll then hike down into Thaynes Canyon, where we will see: The California-Comstock Mine – perhaps the oldest of the remaining buildings on the PCMR property. The Thaynes Headframe and Thaynes Conveyor – two of the largest projects of The Friends of Ski Mountain Mining.
We’ll also visit the Scene of the Crime – in August of 1883, Matt Brennan was shot by a sniper as he observed a geological survey being conducted for E.M. Wheeler by Will Gorlinski. John “Black Jack” Murphy was accused of being the shooter and was hung by vigilantes several days later. Was Black Jack the real killer? Dramatic speculation will ensue.
We’ll also see small remnants of the Crescent Mine – originally developed by John Daly under contract to a company organized by Ed Ferry. This and other properties in the area became key components of Silver King Consolidated aka King Con. We’ll hike back up to the Crescent Chairlift, which will return us to the base. This hike will take approximately 2.5 hours cover about 3 miles and require climbing of about 180 vertical feet. Please bring water, snacks, sunscreen, etc.
