Park City Museum will host a lecture called The B-18 Bomber Crash on Iron Mountain Part Four given by Steve Leatham and David Nicholas on Wednesday, October 18th from 5-6 p.m. The lecture is being held at the Education and Collections Center located at 2079 Sidewinder Drive.
Steve Leatham and David Nicholas return to the Park City Museum lecture circuit with their “fourth” iteration regarding the November 17th, 1941 B-18 bomber crash on Iron Mountain. As in previous lectures, Oz Crosby and Rory Murphy will join Leatham and Nicholas for this discussion. Their continuing research now spans five years.
What’s new in version 4.0? Nicholas will review the US political climate circa 1935 to 1941 including but not limited to Nazi sympathizers, the Neutrality Acts, isolationist policies, America First rhetoric and Hitler’s (deranged) belief that the US would support his ambitions. Leatham will discuss the fascinating connection between Park City resident Ellwood Hyrum Offret (USN) and a Fort Douglas based airmen with intimate knowledge of the B-18 crash. Together they would play vital roles in a daring rescue operation in the Philippine Islands only four months after the Park City crash. For his bravery and service Chief Machinist Mate Offret would be awarded the Silver Star.
