Park City Ski Jumping
Designed by local artist Peg Bodell
In the early 1900s Park City residents spent their leisure hours outside the mines enjoying many winter activities. One favorite daredevil sport was strapping on your wood skis and launching off Old Town roofs to achieve the greatest distance. Soon the locals built the Creole Hill jumps for beginners and then Ecker Hill which was built for more professional athletes.
Built in 1928, Ecker Hill hosted many state, regional, national, and international competitions throughout the 1930s and 1940s, culminating with the U.S. National Championships in 1949. Alf Engen set several world records at Ecker Hill in the 1930s. Park City's local ski jumping club, The Broken Hearts Club, not only entered in competitions but also hosted and produced events.
Mel Fletcher (1918-2010) was #32 on The Broken Hearts Club team and a leader in Park City’s early skiing ventures. In the 1950s he obtained his ski-instructor certification and founded the Snow Park Ski School. When Treasure Mountains opened in 1963, Fletcher became the director of their ski school. Today he is remembered by his namesake run, Mel’s Alley, located at Park City Mountain Resort and as a founding member of the Glenwood Cemetery Association.
