The Museum’s Holiday Ornaments have become a tradition for many locals (and many who think of Park City as home).
Featuring different elements of Park City’s history, each year we create a new and unique ornament. Buy this year’s or collect them all. Either way, you’ll be supporting the Park City Museum’s efforts to save the last remaining historic mining structures and acquiring a family keepsake.

Silver King Mine
Designed by local artist Peg Bodell
The Silver King Mining Co. was incorporated in 1892 and quickly became one of the most profitable mines in the United States. It became known worldwide for its high-quality silver, making its investors millionaires.
This building housed the hoist structure and mechanics for the mine shaft and elevator. The mine not only relied on state-of-the-art equipment, but it also could not have existed without manual labor, from both humans and animals, twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week.
These animals – specifically horses and mules – were highly valued due to their strength, intelligence, and mobility. Horses were raised and lowered down the mine shaft in canvas slings before being connected to the underground ore carts and hauling them through dark tunnels. Horses were phased out of their mine work in the 1930s and replaced with more efficient machinery.
The Silver King Mine closed in 1953 when metal prices fell after World War II but remains standing as a prominent historic landmark at Park City Mountain Resort.
